Tekno Says Simple, Funny Content Is Winning Over “Intellectual” Entertainment

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Tekno has weighed in on the growing “Olodo Uprising” conversation, arguing that entertainment does not always have to be intelligent or intellectually deep to attract an audience.

The singer made the comments during an interview with Yanga FM, where he discussed the popularity of comedian Carter Efe and compared today’s internet comedy culture with the humour of classic Nollywood characters such as Osuofia and Mr Ibu.

Tekno Explains Why Goofy Content Connects With Audiences

Tekno questioned the idea that audiences must consume intellectually demanding entertainment to have a good time.

He pointed to Carter Efe as an example, explaining that he can watch the comedian for hours simply because his goofy behaviour makes him laugh.

The singer’s point was that entertainment can succeed because it is funny, relatable or simply enjoyable, without necessarily carrying a deeper intellectual message.

From Osuofia and Mr Ibu to Carter Efe

Tekno also drew a comparison between today’s online comedians and popular Nollywood characters from previous generations.

He referenced Osuofia and Mr Ibu, arguing that their appeal was often rooted in exaggerated and humorous behaviour rather than intellectual complexity.

According to Tekno, the major difference is that social media now allows entertainers to create this type of content from home and potentially make money from it.

Tekno Weighs In on the “Olodo Uprising”

The comments come amid online conversations around the phrase “Olodo Uprising,” which has been used in discussions about the growing popularity of simple, unconventional and comedy-driven internet content.

Tekno’s remarks add his perspective to the debate, suggesting that audiences sometimes want entertainment simply because it makes them laugh rather than because it challenges them intellectually.

Entertainment Does Not Always Have to Be Serious

For Tekno, the popularity of entertainers such as Carter Efe shows that there is room for different forms of entertainment.

His comments have added another layer to the ongoing discussion about what Nigerian audiences find entertaining in the social-media era.
