Slimcase Explains Why Music Promotion Has Become So Expensive in Nigeria

Nigerian street-pop artiste Slimcase has raised concerns about the growing financial demands of promoting music in Nigeria, saying $200,000 may no longer be enough to make a song widely popular.

The singer made the comment during a recent interview on Echo Room, where he discussed the challenges facing emerging artistes trying to gain attention in the Nigerian music industry.

Slimcase Highlights the Rising Cost of Music Promotion

According to Slimcase, properly promoting a single in Nigeria can now cost as much as ₦265 million.

He linked the rising costs partly to the growing influence of social media creators. He said dancers and content creators who once approached artistes to use their songs now often demand substantial payments to feature those songs in their content.

Slimcase said:

“$200,000 is not enough to blow a song now.”

Influencer Culture Has Changed Music Marketing

The “Shaku Shaku” hitmaker contrasted today’s music industry with previous years, when dancers would reportedly reach out to artistes seeking opportunities to promote or feature their music.

He argued that the relationship has changed as influencers and content creators have become important channels for music discovery and promotion.

Emerging Artistes Face a Tougher Road to Recognition

Slimcase believes the increasing cost of promotion creates another barrier for upcoming musicians who may not have the financial backing required for large-scale campaigns.

He also argued that the situation contributes to established artistes and familiar sounds remaining prominent while many emerging musicians struggle to gain exposure.

Slimcase Calls for More Support for New Talent

The veteran street-pop artiste appealed to music executives and industry stakeholders to pay attention to the challenges facing emerging musicians.

He also encouraged Nigerian music fans to discover and support upcoming artistes rather than relying solely on influencers and mainstream media to determine what enters their playlists.
