King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, widely known as King Oyo, was the traditional monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and became internationally known after ascending the throne at just three years old in 1995.

Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo succeeded his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, following his death in August 1995. He went on to become the long-serving Omukama (King) of Tooro.

King Oyo Dies at 34

King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. His death prompted widespread mourning in Uganda and internationally.

He was buried on September 12, 2026, at the Karambi Royal Tombs in western Uganda. His burial also marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Tooro monarchy.

His Legacy

Although Uganda’s traditional kings do not exercise constitutional political power, King Oyo remained an influential cultural figure. He was involved in initiatives around youth empowerment, education, health and environmental conservation, and also served as a United Nations goodwill ambassador focused on HIV/AIDS advocacy.

Succession After King Oyo

King Oyo’s death has been followed by a disputed succession process. The royal clan selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as his successor, while members of Oyo’s family have challenged the decision and raised claims concerning a possible heir.
